Michel Sardaby

Michel Sardaby was born in 1935 in Martinique. He learned to play the piano when he was 5 years old; in the brasserie of his father in Fort-de-France, where music was constantly played.At 10 years age, Michel is a noted prodigy, playing with the passion of with experienced musicians. He goes to Paris where he continues his studies of art at the Boulle School until obtaining his diploma in 1956, at which point he decides to devote himself exclusively to his career of being a professional jazz pianist. Throughout the 60s, he played piano with blues musicians like Sonny Boy Williamson and T-Bone Walker, at the same time beginning to release more jazz-focused solo albums. His Caribbean roots and bebop spirit tell the story of highly respected musician whose albums are priceless items in Japan. After graduating from the Ecole Boulle, the highest school for decorative arts in Paris (1956), he graduated from the bebop school of Paris whose masters were no less than Dexter Gordon, T-Bone Walker, Sonny Criss, Kenny Clarke, Ben Webster, J.J. Johnson, Chet Baker, Art Taylor, Jimmy Gourley, Guy Lafitte, René Thomas ou Pierre Michelot. His personal discography features unique encounters with Monty Alexander (1984, Carribean Duet) or Ron Carter (1984, Voyage). Trio interplay is his favourite context with the help of carefully chosen rhythm sections such as Percy Heath and Connie Kay (1970, Night Cap), Richard Davis and Billy Cobham (1972, In New York), Richard Davis and Billy Hart (1974, Gail), Rufus Reid and Marvin Smitty Smith (1989, Going Places), Jay Leonardt and Tootie Heath (1990, Night Blossom), Buster Williams and Ben Riley (1996, Plays Classics and Ballads) or Reggie Johnson and John Betsch (1997, Intense Moments). He also favours the quintet, yielding a great recording with Ralph Moore (ts) et veteran trumpeter from Memphis Louis Smith (1992, Straight On). He has recently been working with young Turks from New York such as Robert Dickson (ts) and Derrick Garner (tp). His latest albums, Karen (2003, Reuben Rogers and Dion Parson), At Home (2004, Ray Drummond and Winard Harper) and Night in Paris (2005) reflect the mastery and craftsmanship of a poet. A melodic composer, a moving soloist, he relentlessly revisits Ellington, Monk and standard songs that the perfect vehicle for his sophisticated take on the blues. One of jazz’s best-kept secrets. Today, THE MICHEL SARDABY TRIO features one the best rythm section you can find in Paris with Darryl Hall or Wayne Dockery on the bass and Doug Sides or John Betsch on the drums.

Cette mémoire caribéenne couplée à son écoute du bebop et son vécu d’une richesse incroyable en ont fait un musicien particulièrement respecté, voire mythique au Japon où l’on s’arrache ses productions. Son parcours prend naissance dans les années cinquante quand il bénéficie, après ses études à l’Ecole Boulle en 1956, de la présence en France de musiciens exceptionnels et d’un tissu musical vivant avec de multiples clubs. C’est ainsi qu’il joue abondamment avec Dexter Gordon, T-Bone Walker, Sonny Criss, Kenny Clarke, Ben Webster, J.J. Johnson, Chet Baker, Art Taylor, Jimmy Gourley ainsi que les figures marquantes du jazz européen comme Guy Lafitte, René Thomas ou Pierre Michelot. Sa discographie, d’une qualité rare, retrace des rencontres de qualité, comme avec Monty Alexander (1984, Carribean Duet) ou Ron Carter (1984, Voyage). Son format favori est le trio où il excelle par sa finesse avec le concours de sections rythmiques toujours remarquablement choisies comme Percy Heath et Connie Kay (1970, Night Cap), Richard Davis et Billy Hart (1974, Gail), Rufus Reid et Marvin Smitty Smith (1989, Going Places), Buster Williams et Ben Riley (1996, Plays Classics and Ballads) et évidemment Reggie Johnson et John Betsch (1997, Intense Moments). Il ne dédaigne pourtant pas le quintet qui lui valu de belles réussites avec Ralph Moore (ts) et le vétéran Louis Smith (tp), accompagné par les jeunes Peter Washington et Tony Reedus (1992, Straight On). Il a d’ailleurs récemment remis à l’honneur cette formation avec de jeunes new-yorkais, Robert Dickson (ts) et Derrick Garner (tp). Ses derniers albums (2006, Night in Paris) sont le reflet d’une personnalité dont l’art serein et maîtrisé constitue une leçon de musicalité. Entre Bud Powell et Tommy Flanagan, il est aujourd’hui à un sommet de maturité et de maîtrise de son art. Compositeur ultra-mélodique, soliste souvent émouvant, il ne cesse de relire son propre répertoire tout en revisitant les grandes œuvres de Duke Ellington ou Thelonious Monk et les standards qui sont le véhicule idéal pour son expression à la fois raffinée et ancrée dans le blues, énergique et construite. L'actuel MICHEL SARDABY TRIO se situe dans la lignée des formations précédentes, doté d'une rythmique américaine de premier ordre, composée du contrebassiste Darryl Hall et du batteur Doug Sides. Michel Sardaby joue aussi fréquemment avec Wayne Dockery (b) et John Betsch (dm).
