Bio:

Who knows? If he wasn’t born under the sign of Sagittarius, perhaps would have never had a nomadic temper and taste for adventure. Shipped to Europe at the age of fifteen, the little Manu was touched by the music already in his early years, his very first contact with music happened by attending the Protestant church where he received both religious and musical education. Manu started travelling between Paris and Brussels, the wandering between these two places made him discover the Jazz scene and some of the Jazz masters, Armstrong, Ellington, Young, Parker, of which we can still hear the influence and this undoubtedly contributed to forge his musician's soul. When, with the effervescence of Africa independence, the great Zairian singer Kabasele landed in Brussels he asked him to join his group "The African Jazz" to play Congolese music, Manu meets the challenge. It was the beginning of a long participation during which Manu contributed to the recording of forty albums, before making the decisive step of moving to Kinshassa. There an idea, gradually, manifested in Manu’s mind: create woven and rich patchwork of spirited conversations between jazz and African music. Electric by nature, in a state of constant watch, with SOUL MAKOSSA (1972) Manu became the first francophone artist to make the States shake. The song is a clear example of Manu’s attitude towards musical genres fusion, destroying musical chapels, building bridges between continents, linking together traditional sounds and the ones of the future. From this moment on Manu started touring, always welcomed by the crowd with a joyful and warm enthusiasm. He served as the first chairman of the Cameroon Music Corporation, with a high profile in artists' royalties disputes. In 2004 Manu was appointed a UNESCO Artist for Peace. Nowadays the artist represent an inspiration for many young talents, and on the eve of its 80th candle, Manu Dibango is not ready to hang up his sax shaker.
